Volunteers Program
We are seeking two full-time volunteer research assistants for the Ocean Community Conservation project “Todos Somos Pacifico” forthcoming field season in Tribuga’s Gulf, Colombia Pacific coast.
Specifically, you will assist on boat and land-based surveys. Both assistants are needed from July, August and September. The project investigates changes in breeding and mating behaviour from humpback whales due to vessel interactions.
This season, our fieldwork is going to be based at Cabo Corriente, where it has been known to gather whales and dolphins as well as, whale watching boat trips. You will assist with both boat and land-based surveys, and the collection of photo-ID, behavioural and ecological data from humpback whales and their environment. Alternatively, you could also have the opportunity to join and learn from fellow scientist whom are in the area investigating population abundance, genetics and acoustics on humpback whales. Prior to field work you will be train on handling equipment, photo ID and information on cetaceans.
Assistants should be flexible and patient, as our fieldwork schedule is highly weather dependent: when the weather permits, we will work long hours on the water and on consecutive days; when the weather does not permit fieldwork, we will be working on photo-matching and processing, data entry. The experience is well worth it, as you will gain insight into the behaviour of an incredible population of humpback whales, especially mother-calf association and mating social behaviour, an appreciation for turtles nesting and flying fish passing by, as well as, the importance and joy of engaging and collaborating with communities involve in this activity and socio-economically dependant from it. We seek out enthusiastic, committed, hard-working individuals with the willingness to learn and the ability to acquire new skill set.
The location where we are living is a remote beautiful and somehow isolated place, for this reason it is highly recommended to bring books and movies for your own entertainment as well as, being an easy-going, team player with a positive attitude. Nevertheless, this place is great for hikes, isolated clear ponds, blissful meditations and surf lessons with local children clubs.
